Chichi Maponya is the Maponya Group of Companies Managing Director. Maponya is the founder of Mathari Resources, a minerals and energy investment company, predominantly women owned, with a focus on mining, procurement and trading.
Maponya was previously with Kwezi Group as Director for Business Development.
Maponya worked with her prominent father and businessman, Richard Maponya, in the Development of Maponya Mall, a 65 000m2 Mall in Soweto.
Maponya began her business career in the family businesses, and went on to work for a property development company, later joining The South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE). Soon thereafter she joined Black Like Me Products, one of the largest cosmetics manufacturers in SA. Following that she established a communications company, with clients such as Coca Cola and MTN.
She serves on several boards – Kwezi BoE Asset Management, Intertoll Africa, Sitech Systems and Kwezi V3.
Maponya is the trustee of the Marina Maponya Memorial Fund; trustee of Maponya Mall Property Trust; Deputy Chairman, Brand SA; Director, Tennis SA; Chairman, Opera Africa.
Maponya was elected Business Woman of The Year 2008/009, a title which her mother, the late Marina Maponya won 26 years prior.
Maponya was nominated for the Johnnie Walker Celebrating Strides Entrepreneurship Category 2008/2009, and also nominated for the Olay Iconic Woman Awards 2009.
Maponya is a graduate of the University of Natal with a BCom Degree.
